- Uniquely actionable modules
- Good hand-holding for totally new learners
- Conversation connectors PDF's are well done
- Helpful resource collections
- Lots of 'filler' content
- Needs more Speak from Day 1 modules
- Teachable platform
- Pricey
Fluent In 3 Months Premium serves as a good hand-holder for completely new language learners who are in the dark about how to get started learning a language. There are some solid gems of advice scattered throughout, however there's excessive 'filler' content making the course seem larger than it actually is.
Overall, a very helpful first step for those new to foreign language learning but would be *much* better with added modules.
Benny Lewis of Fluent In 3 Months has released numerous products over the years, including a bestseller, but today I thought I’d just give a brief review of his flagship product: Fluent In 3 Months Premium.
It’s priced at $97 (one-time, non-recurring charge) and hosted on Teachable.
I’m not a fan of Teachable myself as I find that courses on that platform all tend to look and feel the same, but one of the things you’ll notice about Fi3M immediately is that it’s full of lessons and modules.
Fluent In 3 Months course review
It’s quite comprehensive and is broken up into 7 sections:
- Speak From Day 1 video lessons
- Premium video tutorials
- Masterclass video interviews
- Extended masterclass audio interviews
- Language immersion
- Fi3M Director’s Cut
- Resources
The real meat of actionable, useful content can be found in parts 1, 2, 5 and 7.`
Polyglot interviews
The interviews are primarily just video/audio chats with prolific polyglot bloggers/vloggers (e.g. Richard Simcott, Luca Lampariello), but there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of interviews and videos featuring these same people all over YouTube.
There wasn’t really anything I heard in the interviews that provided a fresh perspective or “insider tips”.
Speak From Day 1
The Speak From Day 1 video lessons are helpful but very short (1 - 2 mins on average).
In my opinion, these modules should be expanded and at least doubled in quantity since there are so many potential topics to cover.
The “Resources” section has some excellent material (e.g. the PDF’s on conversational connectors) that would be much better placed in the main course content or turned into additional course modules for the Speak From Day 1 or Video Tutorial parts.
Language immersion/scheduling
I do see the value in providing the scheduling for many different languages under “Language immersion”, but only for absolute beginners who are utterly in the dark as to how to structure their day.
The sample daily schedules seem over-the-top specific and unrealistic for most cases.
In saying that, the language resource lists appear to be well-researched and very helpful for the languages they cover (quite a lot, in fact).
The Fi3M Director’s Cut seems to revisit this list and the Premium video tutorials offer walkthroughs of some of the main products in the resource lists.
Fluent In 3 Months review summary
Fluent In 3 Months Premium would greatly benefit from at least 20 or 30 more modules for the Speak From Day 1 section and Premium video lessons.
Interviews are redundant at this point, since YouTube is filled with the same content and there are no “insider tips” that can’t be found elsewhere.
At $97, it’s probably slightly overpriced until they add more modules (there is a 30 day refund policy).
That being said, I found it to be a solid, hand-holding resource for brand new learners who really need to be guided through the basics. Benny has a unique take on speaking from day one, and that’s really what this course aims to get you doing.
